The Royal Welsh Museum – Brecon

The Royal Welsh Museum

The Royal Welsh Museum in Brecon tells the long and proud story of the Royal Welsh, Wales’s infantry regiment. The Royal Welsh was formed in 2006 when The Royal Regiment of Wales merged with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, but our regimental history has a much greater reach than this date suggests.

The earliest units associated with the Royal Welsh were formed in 1689, and having seen action in virtually every major British conflict since the seventeenth century, the Regiment can easily lay claim to having one of the finest histories in the British Army. The Royal Welsh boasts of 244 battle honours and 43 of our soldiers have received the Victoria Cross, the Army’s highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. The Museum of The Royal Welsh tells the long and proud story of the Royal Welsh, Wales’ infantry regiment. The Royal Welsh was formed in 2006 when The Royal Regiment of Wales merged with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, but our regimental history has a much greater reach than this date suggests as the Museum proudly represents all these units. The Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh tells the fascinating story of some of the British army’s most famous regiments: The Royal Welch Fusiliers and The Royal Regiment of Wales (formerly the 24th, 41st and 69th Foot, and later the South Wales Borderers, Welch Regiment and Monmouthshire Regiment). This long history, dating back to the late 1680s, is told through many kinds of objects including uniforms, medals, weapons and models. The regiments have seen action in many prominent events, including the British campaign in South Africa (visit us and discover what really happened in the 1879 Zulu War!), and both world wars. Forty-three of the regiments’ soldiers have received the Victoria Cross, and we commemorate their sacrifice and heroism as well as that of all the men and women associated with our regiments who have contributed so much to our country.
